Little Mediums
My daughter first spoke of her two sisters in Heaven when she was nine years old. I was sitting in the living room with her when she announced that she’d been speaking with them in the bedroom mirror. Though I knew by then that she had mediumistic talents, I had no idea that she was in touch with the baby I'd lost before her and then with her. I certainly didn’t know that they were the spirits who guide, protect and help her every day—or that this oversight was causing her problems socially and in school. Krissy was sweet and well-meaning, but highly distractible in the classroom. The doctors wanted to label her ADD / ADHD, but there was nothing wrong with her brain. She was just connecting with the spirits of her miscarried siblings. She was in full communication with her guides in Heaven, every day.
I suddenly saw that my brown-eyed girl was a medium and the behavioral, memory and concentration problems she was facing at school were not problems at all. The real problem was a lack of understanding in her father and me, accompanied by an educational system and greater culture that aren’t set up to accommodate or address children’s spirituality. It wasn’t that Krissy couldn’t or wouldn’t pay attention; to the contrary, she was paying attention to too much at once. She was having trouble focusing on the physical world around her because she was in another world, too—one where she was interacting with spirits all day long. And she wasn’t just communicating with her sisters. She was also channeling messages and connecting to the deceased loved ones of her fellow classmates.
In addressing and nurturing Krissy’s mediumistic abilities, I began to see how the labels we give to children are often incorrect. I started to realize that many of these children are not disordered; they are merely highly sensitive to vibrational energy. This is why when parents take the medication route for their children, they are often disappointed by the outcome. Children are often unhappier, get sicker, or become zombies, losing some aspects of their personalities. Like many of us, part of their mission on Earth is to develop their gifts; medications only serve to shut that down, denying these children of the spiritual connection that they are here to hone and master.
And there sure are a lot of potential little mediums out there. According to the CDC’s 2015 survey, the total number of Americans with ADHD continues to rise — up from 7.8 percent in 2003 to 9.5 percent in 2007 and 11 percent in 2011.[Statistics Canada reports that ADHD it is also the most prevalent childhood psychiatric disorder in Canada, where eighty percent of children maintain their diagnosis into adolescence and at least sixty percent remain impaired by symptoms in adulthood.[Many of their parents are yearning to provide more for their children, and they’re ready to hear a story from someone went through the trenches and found hope on the other side—even if the explanation is challenging or uncomfortable to believe.
In truth, the statistics above should be even harder to believe. It just can’t be true that all of these children are disordered. Many parents who are on the spiritual path themselves, or are dabbling in spiritual concepts, are ready to hear a more wholistic explanation. They’re heart-broken and dismayed to receive these diagnoses, because they know their children; they wonder how something could be wrong when, in their heart, their child feels so very right. Furthermore, many of these parents notice that these diagnoses and medications are thrown at their children right away, without any examination of other symptoms that may indicate a spiritual issue is at play. Anxiety, panic attacks, aggression, self-destructive behaviors, nightmares and/or trouble sleeping join hyper-activity and concentration problems as signs of mediumship. A spirit tries to communicate with us, and without realizing it, we begin focusing on that energy. If we don’t teach our children how to deal with these experiences, they can really suffer over factors far outside of their control.
When I came upon this realization, we were a few weeks into a parent and child intuition development program. The class, which was hosted by Donata Eigenseher at Carmel Joy Baird’s Ranch at the time, was designed to help parents and children develop their mediumistic gifts together. Krissy had no way of knowing about the sex of my miscarriages, though she’d already shown me things that had pushed the limits of my belief. So though I had no idea she was about to drop such a bomb, it made a lot of sense; after all, I was already learning that my daughter’s connection to the Divine was greater than anything I could fully comprehend. It was a relief to realize that the challenges she faced at school didn’t need to follow her for the rest of her life; with proper training, she could funnel the exact same set of factors into something beautiful and deeply valuable.
Most of the tools we have implemented at home and in school are simple, inexpensive and highly effective. They serve to ground Krissy’s energy, bring her awareness back into her actions and call her concentration back into the present moment. She is also confident now in telling spirit when they need to leave, and if she is willing to deliver a message based on how she is feeling. She has learned to set healthy boundaries with higher energies. As she’s developed her mediumship, Krissy has shown great improvement in terms of concentration and hyperactivity. Her sleep is improving and she’s happier overall.
Children and teens aren’t the only ones who benefit from this process. Like many of the participating parents, I’ve found that accompanying her training has taught me to nurture my own talents, too. This has naturally caused me to reflect back on my own life. How many of my struggles as a child, teenager and adult were caused by unacknowledged mediumship? These things do run in families, after all. Through the process of answering this question, and through consciously developing my own gifts, I’ve become even more determined to help Krissy and other Little Mediums along the spiritual path.
